Canva Craft Is Canva's First In-House Image Model
Canva has launched Craft, its first image-generation model built from scratch by Canva Research. Unlike a general image model focused mainly on photorealism, Craft is positioned around design work such as posters, presentations, infographics, marketing graphics and layouts that need readable text and deliberate composition.
Canva says Craft plans the scene before rendering it, mapping elements, scale, hierarchy and text so the final result is easier to control. The model is available inside Canva and through the public API, with output up to 2K and support for a wide range of aspect ratios.
Craft plans before it renders
Canva describes a two-stage process where the model first creates a layout plan and then renders the image. That architecture is meant to improve placement, typography and relationships between elements.
For working designers, that is more relevant than raw image realism. A poster with broken hierarchy or unreadable text still requires heavy manual cleanup.
The model is trained around design tasks
Canva says the model was built specifically for design-oriented outputs rather than simply copying the behavior of a photo generator.
That should make it better suited to marketing assets, social graphics, presentation visuals and branded creative work where composition matters as much as image quality.
Editable output is part of the strategy
Craft is designed to work with Canva's broader editing stack so generated work can continue through normal refinement instead of ending as a flat image.
This matters because professional design rarely ends at the first generation. The value comes from correcting copy, changing color, repositioning elements and adapting the asset.
Developers can use Craft through the API
Canva has exposed Craft through its image-generation API, giving other products a way to call the model directly.
That turns Craft into infrastructure, not just a feature inside Canva's editor, and opens the door to automated campaign and branded-content workflows.
The benchmark claim needs context
Canva says Craft ranks highly on DesignArena and positions Canva Research among the strongest image-model labs.
Crowdsourced rankings are useful signals, but production quality still depends on consistency, typography, editability, prompt adherence and repeated real-world performance.
What creators should test
Designers should try text-heavy posters, multi-element layouts, brand colors and revisions that require only one part of the image to change.
If Craft reduces correction time while preserving editability, it becomes much more useful than a model that only produces visually impressive flattened images.
